Yamantaka embodies perfect wisdom and holds the key to the ultimate philosophy of life and death. It is said to possess a unique supreme power to guide beings toward Buddhahood. Standing high among Dharma protectors, it carries profound and sacred spiritual implications.

大威德，因其能降服世间魔障，增长行者的智慧与勇气，故称大威；又有护善之功，以智慧力摧灭烦恼业障，故称大德。这两个字眼组合在一起叫大威德，我觉得概括得很精准。

大威德是从本尊形象，或是图象学也好、器物上也好，他都是一个非常招人喜欢的形象。尤其是对藏传佛教比较了解的朋友都非常喜欢她，所以无论是他的本尊形象，还是收藏市场上大威德题材（的艺术品），都特别受欢迎。

​大威德是文殊菩萨的忿怒相，文殊菩萨也叫文殊师利，在整个佛教系统内，她是七佛之师，是智慧的代表。这个智慧跟我们世俗中说的智慧有很大区别，这个智慧是一种广大无边的、高深莫测的、全然了知的、能够究竟到彼岸的智慧，而不是说高考状元的智慧。

​看过一种说法，当佛陀即将入灭的时候非常担忧佛法的未来，于是诸位佛菩萨都到佛陀面前来发誓守护正法。为了表决心，诸位大菩萨都实现了忿怒相，据说大势至菩萨变成了金刚手，观世音菩萨实现了马头金刚，金刚萨垛实现了普巴金刚，文殊菩萨显出了大威德金刚的形象。
​由于大威德金刚形象太凶猛恐怖，金刚手手里的杵、普巴金刚的普巴、马头金刚的势仗，都在见到大威德形象后掉到了地上。这虽然是个传说，但是也可以从侧面去想见大威德忿怒尊的忿怒到了一个什么样的程度。

​大威德既是圆融无碍的智慧代表，同时又掌握着人类终极的哲学宗教思考的钥匙。“智慧和生死”，这两把钥匙都在他的掌控之中，这是个非常不得了的事情。

​说到这里还要提一下大威德的功德，他的功德里面有很多跟其他本尊相类似，但有一条非常特殊：传说大威德能够强制性地让人成佛。

强制性成佛，有它非常深奥的宗教内涵和修行方法在里面，我们作为爱好者没法研究得更深，但是听上去段位是很高的。而且其他的本尊护法都没有提过有这个能力。

大威德代表着智慧，通达生死，在众多本尊护法中也是地位非常高的。形象内涵丰富，而这仅仅是大威德象征寓意的很小一部分，但仅仅这一小部分，已经十分殊胜了。
