This piece is immediately impressive at a glance; combining these two themes makes it an unbeatable presence. Worn as a pendant or carried around, it’s basically like a talisman. The patina is smooth, glossy, and even, with fine, uniform weathering.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the vajra symbolizes invincible wisdom and the Buddha nature that can overcome everything. It can eliminate all kinds of afflictions and destroy obstacles and demons on the path of cultivation. It is used by tantric deities or yogis as a ritual implement. In the great mandala assemblies, all Vajra deities hold a vajra. Practitioners of mantras also often carry it because this vajra represents the Tathagata’s diamond-like wisdom, used to dispel inner demons of ignorance and delusions, as well as external obstacles.

Stupas originated in India, initially built to house the "relics" left after the cremation of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Later, this tradition was continued by Buddhist monks and masters to store their own relics or other valuable sutras and ritual items. In China, stupas are usually found alongside temples and are an important part of them, symbolizing the purity and sacredness of Buddhism.

The main function of a stupa is to house the relics of the Buddha or later revered monks. Relics are the crystallized essence of a practitioner’s discipline, meditation, and wisdom, symbolizing their achievements and the transmission of spiritual power. Besides relics, some stupas also store and honor other Buddhist objects, like scriptures.

Worshipping a stupa is a way for people to show devotion to the Buddhas and express gratitude. Stupas are considered manifestations of the Buddha and can calm and stabilize the minds of people.

Take the Wu’an Stupa as an example. Located in Wu’an City, Hebei Province, it was first built during the Northern Song Dynasty and is a treasure of ancient architectural art. The Wu’an Stupa not only witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties and social changes but also stood firm through multiple natural disasters thanks to its excellent earthquake resistance, becoming a true witness of time.
